One of the many memorable slogans of Carlsberg, a prestigious brand which was about to launch a new slogan and all new packaging designs.

Working with two other professional Freelance illustrators Paul Maynard and Karl Lloyd, we were commissioned to illustrate and animate “fly through” movies of several retail stores ranging from a corner shop to a hypermarket.

My brief was to faithfully reproduce a 7-11 store in Copenhagen from photo reference. Carlsberg products; the new packaging and advertising posters were carefully placed in key areas for sales guidance – these 3D animations were ultimately reference tools to educate the Carlsberg sales force.

Everything you would expect to see in a 7-11 store was illustrated in 3D and placed carefully in the scene. Click here to view the Carlsberg 3D Animation

My client Armortek (see previous posts) manufacture 1/6th scale engineering military model kits. A kit option is to add radio control capability to the model allowing you to drive, fire the canon and hear the exact engine noise of the armoured vehicle.

The Armortek sound unit uses high quality Tannoy speakers, here I have produced a photo realistic 3D illustration – part of a series which demonstrate the audio installation in the model.

This new kit concept is uniquely different, with the manufacturer now able to offer an unprecedented . . .

The new Universal Lower Hull concept (see right) by Armortek provided the opportunity to 3D illustrate the models in a new light. Previous military model kit releases have been illustrated in battle camouflage as can be seen in my ‘big boys toys’ posting.

This prestigious new kit concept is fundamentally different, with the manufacturer now able to offer an unprecedented choice of three model kits from one production – Bergepanther (recovery vehicle), Jagdpanther (A heavy tank destroyer) and Panther Ausf. G (medium tank). Available as fully machined kits ready for assembly and constructed primarily from aluminium and steel, the 1/6th scale models look very impressive especially in their bare metal state. I decided to light the four kits in 3D the same way you might a luxury car but with bare metal textures. It worked a treat! See the examples here.

Armortek . . .

“Mark has skilfully utilised texturing and lighting to produce stunning 3D illustrations of our kits, so photo realist in fact our customers can’t tell the difference from what is real or 3D. Marks 3D illustrations enable Armortek to start marketing well ahead of manufacturing. A smooth product launch every time, happy customers and a healthy order book”.

To sum up your skills as a 3D illustrator in one image is a challenge . . .

A self promotional marketing campaign to present my work to a new client base. To sum up your skills as a 3D illustrator in one image is a challenge, I finally decided upon a concept that answered this. Professional buyers and designers who receive my advert require a variety of 3D illustration skills, literally a shopping basket full of 3D illustrated items from packaging to furry creatures gives a clear idea that anything is possible in 3D.

New packaging labels for this prestigious coffee product range posed a question - photography or 3D illustration?

Little’s have taken all of their experience and knowledge of coffee to create the best instant coffee you could imagine. It took three years of hard work to get all nine flavours just right, but now they’re available to the public through supermarkets such as Waitrose and online shops. Little’s use 100% pure Arabica coffee which is freeze dried to lock in all that great aroma and then it’s gently flavour with natural or nature identical flavours to give you an incredibly delicious drinking experience. I know, Little’s kindly supplied me with samples during the project for them.

New packaging labels for this prestigious coffee product range posed a question – photography or 3D illustration? Which method was the best solution for their new marketing material. Little’s chose 3D illustration understanding the overall benefits, cost savings and complete control of their product presentation.

No need for trips back into the photographers studio – a new angle or view is just a phone call away once the 3D model is approved. The 3D rendered images are quickly e-mailed and can be supplied to printers and designers at any size or format that’s required

How can a freelance 3D illustratator help your company? Armortek 1/6th Scale Model Tanks have benefited . . .

Armortek is the world’s leading manufacturer of 1/6th scale armour kits. Sold globally to collectors these massive all metal kits are manufactured in the UK as limited editions and are supplied ready to assemble into uniquely individual models.

These beautifully engineered tanks and armoured vehicles are built to last. Complete the build as an impressive static display piece, or enhance with a specially designed range of electronic options.

As an experienced freelance 3D illustrator I work on a broad range of 3D illustration projects. How can a freelance 3D illustratator help your company? Armortek 1/6th Scale Model Tanks have benefited from using 3D photo realistic illustrations to market their products months before production. The illustrations featured here are the British Cruiser Tank - A34 Comet, the German Tiger I and Panzer III. Meticulous attention to detail and top class engineering have made these all metal model kits the best in the world.

All I require is preliminary sketches from which I can supply high quality 3D illustrations ready for use in print or on the web. Pre-production 3D illustration means you can start marketing pre-launch.

Nominated by Hunter for ‘Freelance Designer of the Year 09’, Mark was among 350 other contestants . . .

The award-winning central heating and stove manufacturer Hunter Stoves is one of the largest manufacturers of multi-fuel stoves in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Mark recommended illustrating their products in 3D, instead of building and photographing prototypes. Subsequently Hunter have revolutionised the way they look at their production and marketing.

Sales have increased by 82% since the release of their new catalogue featuring stoves created in CINEMA 4D. Before Hunter started using 3D Illustrations, the company found the task of creating a catalogue time consuming and very costly. The lengthy process of setting up photo shoots and finding locations was a recurring challenge: Hunter’s marketing material could not keep pace with the manufacturing process. This was mainly due to the fact product prototypes were often delayed or unavailable for photography, which meant delays in printing catalogues and getting them out to the dealerships.

Another problem was shoooting on location. Finding suitable locations was difficult and costly due to the sheer number of images required to fill the 40-page catalogue. Hunter cut its costs by commissioning Mark to create 3D illustration of stoves in CINEMA 4D and combine them with photos of real fireplaces. Camera mapping allowed Hunter to combine a real photo of a fireplace with a 3D model of the stove directly in CINEMA 4D, where the 3D model literally interacts with the photo. For example, the 3D stove is able to cast a realistic shadow onto items in the photo.
